Post Surfulater Version 3.15, Build 0.0 Release Notes

Surfulater Version 3.15, Build 0.0 Release Notes - 24 April 2009
This release includes major updates to the Surfulater code base including removal of seven DLL's and new features such as the ability to Set Text Color, use "Paste as reciprocal 'See also' links" in the Tags tree, jump to Tags in the tags tree via. live Tag field links, Set Article Titles and more.

For the latest news on Surfulater development see the What's New category in our Blog

What's New

  • All of the Surfulater code has been updated to work with the latest Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Compiler, bringing it up to date from the much older Visual C++ Version 6 we were using. This major update makes Surfulater more robust and enables us to use the latest Microsoft technologies as we move forward. A substantial amount of effort has gone into this, taking up much of our development time since the last release.
  • As part of this update we have removed the use of and dependancy on seven DLL's including: Zlib1.dll, ProfUIS282n.dll, SAIGControls.dll, SAIGDBM. dll, MFC42.dll, MSCVRT.dll and MSVCP60.DLL. This code refactoring and repackaging removes problems caused by wrong versions of DLL's and moves us closer to the possibility of a single .EXE, potentially without any need for an Installer. And finally it reduces the size of the Installer download file from 7.79MB to 5.67MB and the installed code footprint from 16.347MB down to 12.68MB. In addition we have removed two Microsoft Windows systems DLL's which are now included with Windows. This further reduces the installer size down to to 5.43MB. Windows 2000 users may need to download and install Gdiplus.dll which is available from the Microsoft Web site at Platform SDK Redistributable: GDI+.
  • You can now set the color of selected text using Format | Set Text Color, the "Set Text Color" toolbar button or "Set Text Color" on the right click context menu. "Remove Text Color" on the context menu sets text back to black. You can use these in edit or non-edit mode. See Highlighting text in the Help for more information.
  • The Color pallets for "Highlight Text" and "Set Text Color" now include a "Reset to Default" capability. This sets the colors used for these commands back to their default "out of the box" values. See Highlighting text in the Help for details.
  • "Copy" and "Paste as reciprocal 'See also' links" can now be used in the Tags and Chronological Knowledge Tree views. Note that you cannot "Copy" articles these tree views and then "Paste" them back in the Normal Tree view.
  • Tags in article Tags fields can now be clicked on and take you the their respective Tag in the Tags Tree. See Tags and Tagging Articles in the Help for details.
  • Tags in article Tags fields have been styled to greatly improve there look.
  • Set Title to selection enables you to set the Title of the current article to the selected text. This is available on the right click context menu, when used on selected text. See Setting Article Titles in the Help for more information.
  • Web Search enables you to perform a Google Search using the selected text as the search term. This is available on the right click context menu, when used on selected text. See Web Search for details.
  • View | Content Elements includes a new option Show Folder Breadcrumbs which shows or hides the new Article - Folder breadcrumbs. At present displaying breadcrumbs can be slow for large Knowledge Bases. This option is useful in such cases until we resolve the performance issue. See Content Elements Display in the Help.
  • You can now use drag and drop while editing content to move text and images.
  • Enter can now be used to enter mutiple blank lines during content editing.
  • The "Add a Link" and "Remove this Link" commands can now be used when not in content editing mode.
  • The Classic.css and Crisp.css files have been updated in this release. If you have created modified versions of these then you need to add the 'New Tag field Hyperlinks' section and the ExtJS style updates to your file(s).
  • The Surfulater.SurfulaterPatch file which contains Folder and Article HTML Templates has a new template "_FolderTagsCollapsed".
  • File | Import Bookmarks is no longer disabled in Knowledge Tree views other than the Normal view.
  • File | Import Bookmarks | from Firefox no longer imports bookmarks directly, and instead displays instructions on how to do this. This was done because Firefox has completely changed how they store bookmarks, leaving the original bookmarks file we import out of date. I assume this changed with Firefox Version 3, but I am not sure.
  • File | Convert Tree to Unicode has been removed as it is no longer required.
  • More images have been added to menu items on the context menu used when text is selected.
  • The text "Surfulater" has been removed from the start of the Subject field when Send To|HTML E'Mail is used.
  • As usual, more updates to the Help.
What's Fixed

  • Clicking on a link to a bookmark within an article now works. Thanks to Steve Forbes for reporting this.
  • Clicking in the Knowledge Tree window with no KB's open no longer crashes Surfulater.
  • Send To | HTML E-Mail etc. and Publish to Web KB... no longer include the new Article - Folder breadcrumbs.
  • You can no longer Edit or Delete the "UnTagged Articles" Folder in the Tags Tree.
  • Printing all articles in a Folder now prints all articles. Previously it may only have printed some. This is related to the new V3 dynamic content display capability.
  • Clicking on an articles Web page thumbnail and using the context menu item "Open Web Site in Browser" could fail to open certain pages. This has been fixed.
  • Articles captured from the Clipboard now correctly handle Reference links which include non-Ascii characters. Thanks to Thomas Straten for reporting this.
  • Indent and Undent work again in the content window editor. Thanks to Tracy Dryden for reporting this.
  • The code that handles content editing for Ordered and UnOrdered Lists has been updated and improved.
  • Content containing multiple paragraphs could leave a gap at the top of each field. This has been fixed.
  • The "Add a Link" and "Remove this Link" commands are now disabled for internal Surfulater links such as 'See Also' links etc. This stops you from breaking such links.
  • During content editing, clicking on the Edit Pencil for an article or folder other than the one being edited, now correctly saves the current article and edits the new one.
  • During content editing, clicking on the Edit Pencil now only toggles out of edit mode when you click on the pencil for the field currently being edited.
  • Fixed a problem in Surfulater's Web Server which could potentially cause Surfulater to crash.
  • Opening a .Surfulater file from Windows Explorer, when Surfulater is running, now works again on Windows XP etc.
  • When a .Surfulater file is opened from Windows Explorer or some other external process and the file can't be opened (ex. it doesn't exist) Surfulater no longer re-opens the files it had open when it was last used.
  • Fixed some internal issues in the Tags Tree.
  • Some early V3 and V2.94x KB's could fail during conversion of their SQL Database, possibly causing Surfulater to crash. This has been fixed. Thanks to Hector Sosa Jr for his help with this.
See V3 Release Notes and V2 Release Notes in the Help for older release notes.
