Surfulater Version 2.52, Build 0.0 & 10.0 Release Notes - 17 January 2008
This release is primarily a maintenance update to address some issues with the new Web KB Publishing capability. Your existing KB's will be updated to correct any invalid XML therein. It also includes two new, user contributed, article templates. V2.52.10.0 fixes a problem in yeterdays V2.52.0.0 release.
The latest What's New information can be found on our Blog.
What's New- Two new article templates: "Texts and Authors" by Edwin Relf and "Quotation" by Ed Taylor are included in this release. Many thanks for creating and submitting these.
- The Surfulater Firefox Extension has been updated to work with Firefox Version 3 (Beta).
What's Fixed- Article and Folder Titles now correctly handle & characters, converting them to their valid XML representation. This fixes a problem where some KB's would not work with the new Web KB Publishing capability. This also fixes a problem where .Surfulater files could contain invalid XML.
- Tree Article and Folder names (Titles) can now include < and > characters. Previously any <text> would not be displayed.
- All KB's are updated to fix any invalid XML caused by incorrect handling of & characters in Article/Folder Titles and also in Template names. Surfulater files should once again be valid XML.
- When you click on an Attached Web Page in a Web KB, a page is now displayed informing you that attached web pages aren't supported yet.
- Publishing Web KB's no longer incorrectly logs an error when Attached Web Pages are processed.
- Web Page thumbnails are now added to articles when no content is selected in the Web Browser. This is an old bug which has only recently come to my attention.
- Several users have reported a crash when Surfulater closes. This is an issue with a third party library that Surfulater uses. The latest version of this library is used in this release, along with other work, which we hope will resolve this issue. If this problems persists in the release please let me know.
- All Date and Time values which get added to KB content now use Unicode. For example Date Created, Attachment dates etc. This fixes an issue where non- English Web KB's could use the wrong character set for dates. Thanks to Alexander Deliyannis for reporting this.
- PNG image files can now be pasted into Surfulater content.

Surfulater Version 2.50, Build 0.0 Release Notes - 18 December 2007
The big new feature in this release is the ability to view Knowledge Base's in your Web Browser, without any need whatsoever for Surfulater. This enables you to view your Knowledge Bases wherever you happen to be, as well as sharing them with colleagues and friends, locally or over the Internet.
For more on this release see this Blog Article and for more on Web KB Publishing see this Blog article.
What's New- File|Publish to Web KB... and Knowledge Tree Folder Context menu|Publish to Web KB... enable either an entire Knowledge Tree or a chosen Folder and all of its contents to be published to a stand-alone Web Knowledge Base, that can be viewed in a Web Browser, without any need for Surfulater. The Web KB can be published to a USB Stick or USB Hard Drive, your local PC or a PC on your LAN and then viewed by anyone with access to it. It can also be uploaded to a Web Server, so you, your friends and colleagues can view it, wherever they are. All Attached and Linked files are published and are therefore also available. Attached Web pages will be published in a future release. See Power Features|Publish to a Web KB in the Surfulater Help for more information.
What's Fixed- Send To|MHT File now uses a valid filename when # is included in the article title. Previously MHT files with # in their title couldn't be opened in IE. Thanks to Michael Hildebrand for reporting this.
Surfulater Version 2.30, Build 10.0 Release Notes - 15 October 2007
The important new features in this release are the ability to link from Documents in other Applications to Surfulater Articles, as well as being able to link between articles in different Knowledge Bases. Cut/Copy & Paste usage has been enhanced and related issues from the last release fixed.
For more on this release see this Blog article.
What's New- You can now add links to documents in other programs which reference Surfulater articles. For example you can add a link to a Surfulater article to a MS Word Document. Clicking on the link in the Word document starts Surfulater and displays the specified article. This makes the information you have in Surfulater all the more useful as it can now be instantly accessed from other programs. See: External Links for more information.
- 'See Also' links now work across Knowledge Bases as well as within a KB. This enables you to link an article in one KB to an article in another KB and vice-versa. Simply use the same procedure you use now. ie. "Copy" the source article in one KB and use "Past as reciprocal 'See also' links" in the other KB. See Creating Cross Reference links for more information.
- Edit|Copy, Edit|Cut and the Copy & Cut toolbar buttons now work on records selected in the tree or on content selected in the content window, depending on which window has focus. The menu and toolbar tips reflect the operation to be performed and some feedback is displayed on the status bar. See Cut, Copy, Paste & Cut/Copy Image for more information.
- When you right click on an image and no content is selected, the context menu now includes Copy Image and Cut Image, with the latter only available in edit mode. These enable you to Cut/Copy images to the clipboard without having to select them. See Cut, Copy, Paste & Cut/Copy Image for more information. From a forum discussion with Hart Posen.
What's Fixed- Ctrl+X and Ctrl+C now work again with content selected in the content window. Thanks to Mitchell Silverman and others for reporting this.
- Edit|Paste now has Ctrl+V displayed with it.
- Clicking on the vertical or horizontal scroll bar, no longer exits edit mode. Thanks to Leigh Wardle for reporting this.
Surfulater Version 2.20, Build 0.0 Release Notes - 4 September 2007
This release focuses on a range of enhancements to make it easier to edit and add new articles from within Surfulater. It addresses various issues our users have been requesting for a while now and was brought to head by a lengthy, well thought through forum post by Jai Kasturi. I'm sure existing and new users alike will welcome these changes.
For more on this release see this Blog article.
What's New- The much requested ability to edit all fields in an article at once, has been implemented. Ctrl+S saves all changes and exits edit mode. This is in addition to Shift+Enter which already does this. Tab and Back+Tab no longer exit edit mode. Escape optionally cancels editing as before.
- The content window context menu has new items for: New Article and New Article from Clipboard. Edit has been changed to Edit this Article or Edit this Folder.
- A new main menu item Edit has been added. Various commands from the Article menu have been moved to this menu. The addition of an "Edit" menu brings Surfulater in line with common Windows practice.
- Edit|New Article and content window context menu New Article now commence editing the new article.
- The Knowledge Tree context menu item New Article now goes into edit mode on the tree item text. This matches the behaviour of New Folder.
- When the content window has focus F2 will now edit the current record starting at the first editable field, if no field in the record has focus (ie. a dashed outline). If a field has focus, editing commences on that field, as in previous releases.
- Edit|Edit current Article/Folder, Shift+F2 has been added to the main menu and the Knowledge Tree context menus. This edits the current Article or Folder in the content window. The current article/folder is the one selected in the Knowledge Tree. Shift+F2 works even if the Knowledge Tree is the active window (has focus).
- A new Toolbar button has been added which does Edit current Article/Folder as described above. It has a Pencil image.
- The Article Edit Pencil image is anew. Alex Chang please take note.
- A new Toolbar button "Create a new article in the current folder" has been added. This comprises a button plus a drop-down menu. The menu lets you choose which article template to use for the new article. Once a new article has been added from this menu or from Edit|New Article, you can click on the button (to the left of the drop-down menu) or press Ctrl+F2 to add new articles of the previously chosen type. Alt+F2 is a new shortcut key which drops down the New Article template toolbar button menu. These new features enable you to quickly add new articles of a specific type, without having to choose the template from a menu. They also enable New Articles to be created entirely with the keyboard.
- The New Article menu (Edit|New Article etc.) now includes shortcut keys which enable you to select any article template using the keyboard. For example the Web template can be selected by pressing W.
- Expand this Record and Collapse this Record have been added to the content window context menu.
- Articles that are collapsed in the content window can now be edited via Edit this Article on the various context menus and Edit|Edit current Article/Folder. They are expanded before editing commences.
- Cut/Copy/Paste have been added to the new Edit menu. These work on the article or folder currently selected in the Knowledge Tree.
- Ctrl+X and Ctrl+C can now be used for Cut and Copy.
- Ctrl+A can now be used for Select All on a field in the content window.
- View|Preferences|Enable Slow click editing has been added. This lets you prevent slow click from commencing edit mode.
- You can now open multiple Knowledge Base via. the Surfulater command line. ex. start Surfulater Hardware "Home Theatre" Contacts
- When Surfulater opens a Knowledge Base that doesn't include a folder name it searches in the following folders:
- View|Preferences|Data Folder.
- My Documents\My Surfulater.
- If the KB isn't found in one of these locations, Surfulater checks to see if a KB with the same name is already open and if so uses that.
- The tilde character ~ can no longer be used in Surfulater Knowledge Base filenames. It is reserved for the new External Links, coming soon.
- When capturing selected content from a Web Page Surfulater no longer displays a message when referenced content, such as images, don't actually exist. Information about the issue is added to the Surfulater Log file. This follows on from an e-mail from Tom O'Sullivan.
What's Fixed
- A number of users have had a problem with Surfulater raising a Crash Report when it is closed. This appears to be a bug in a third party library which Surfulater uses and should be fixed now.
- When Surfulater is set to start minimized to the System Tray it no longer includes a Tab on the Windows Task Bar. Thanks to Richard Henderson for reporting this.
- Slow click to start editing on the Title field of an Article now works (again).
- It was possible for Knowledge Tree items to display "Untitled" when the associated article had a title. This has been fixed. Thanks to Leigh Wardle for reporting this.
- When the Knowledge Base root folder is selected, "Cut" no longer crashes Surfulater.
- When editing an Article, clicking in the Notes field of a Folder didn't always end editing. This has been fixed.
Surfulater Version 2.00, Build 30.10 Release Notes - 19 June 2007 This release fixes a problem with drag & drop of 'See Also' links.
What's Fixed- Articles can once again be dragged from the Knowledge Tree on to the 'See Also' field of an article in the content window. This broke when multiple selection was implemented. Thanks to Carl Lum for reporting it.
- When a drag & drop from the Knowledge Tree is cancelled by pressing Escape or the drop location is invalid, the originally selected articles are once again selected.

To select a specific grouping click on the arrow on the Chronological Order Toolbar button. The chosen setting is stored in the Knowledge Base with each KB having its own distinct setting. See: Knowledge Tree Views
What's Fixed- The Knowledge Tree scrollbar height is once again calculated correctly following a Copy and Paste. There have also been some reports of Surfulater crashing when scrolling the tree. I've not been able to reproduce this but suspect it was also caused by this problem. Thanks to Christopher Lawley for reporting this and Will LaValley, Colin Chalmers.
- Search now correctly treats * and ? as normal characters when they appear inside quotes. Thanks to Christopher Lawley for reporting this.
- Attaching Web pages from IE did not always happen as fast as was possible. This has been fixed.
